It's been a while since I've updated this blog, which is mainly due to a lack of interest in blogging, working on other publication projects, and holiday travels.

So here's the news:

THUGLIT ISSUE 21 is now available at amazon.com with my latest short story, PARADISE. This is the first story I've written using Maui as the setting, and the first story with a character in recovery. I loved writing this story, and was so thrilled that editor extraordinaire, Todd Robinson, felt the same way. BREED, my science fiction novelette, is available with new cover designed by Jacob Wylen in hard copy at createaspace.com.  It will be available at amazon.com in 3-5 days. This was my first try at science fiction (50's style adventure), and erotica. I've talked before on how I ended up meshing the two genre's, and will say again, it's just one of those creative monsters that creeps out when you aren't looking or worrying about who likes what. I'm proud of this story, despite some initial booing over sexual content.

I'm also working on the audio version narrated by Jacob Wylen. This should be available at amazon.com in the next week or so. Jacob is a talented soul, and is getting ready to make a move to Hollywood. I'm very lucky he read BREED, and was excited to work on this project. He loved it so much, he designed a new cover, which as some of you may recognize, is a throwback to old science fictions mags of the 1950's. The kind my dad used to hide in his bottom desk drawer, and that my brother and I used to steal, hide, and read.

My first novelette is now published. BREED was created originally because I had not yet written a science fiction story, and I wanted to do something in memory of my dad, and the copies of Galaxy Magazine that I used to steal from him when I was a pre-teen. Those magazines were my first introduction to Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Harlan Ellison. I wanted to write an adventure story, like the ones that first hooked me on science fiction.

Then an odd thing happened. I was caught up trying to read 50 Shades of Grey, mind you, only out of curiosity. I was so disturbed by how badly written the prose were, and how generally not sexy the book was overall, I never got past chapter 2. I realized I'd never tried my hand at any kind of erotica. I've never really felt any need to write about sex, and have in fact, been intimidated by the whole idea. But it made me curious to see if I could, in fact, write an erotic scene. Somehow that idea, and my idea for a science fiction story became intertwined, and that's how BREED was created.

I suppose, as a writer, I was a bit naive about the impact this story would have on readers. I took the original copy of BREED to a writer's group, and was, admittedly stupidly, surprised by the reaction that several readers had. They were offended by the nature of my interactions, and the scenes I portrayed for my lead character. Some of their comments made sense to me, and I did go back and do extensive rewrites. One of the comments had to do with the "rape" content of the story. I did not agree with that viewpoint very simply because, as a woman who has been raped three times in my life, I am very clear on the difference between rape as a real event, and fictional erotica. I honestly did not see any correlation in this story between the two. There are those who will disagree with this view, and as a woman and a writer, I respect their right to do so.

I then sent a copy to a professional editor at a popular science fiction magazine, telling them about the reactions I'd had, and asking their opinion about the sexuality of the piece. They felt the sex was not gratuitous, and fit the story. I then sent the story to my own editor, who had positive input.

I have been a reader and a writer all my life, and I have great respect for both sides of the view. Ultimately, the reader will decide how they feel about this story. I have been true to my imagination, and as a writer, that's the best I can do.

UPDATES ON DAYLIGHT PRINTING & WRITER'S ANGST

Finally, Mystic Moon is back in print at Amazon.com. My fantasy novelette, Daylight, is included. It's only .99c on Kindle and I doubt I'll see much money from the publishers. A strange brew to be sure. But at least they published my story, and for that I'm grateful.

I decided recently that instead of badgering myself about writing a memoir for my husband; having to go to Maui and slog through two storage containers to find our old love letters and all my journals, I will write what I can today as a love letter. Maybe sometime later I will be inspired to put all that other stuff together, but to be honest, now it's just making me not want to work on what I have.

I was discouraged recently about ever getting published again, when I got a great detailed email from an editor about my erotic space drama. Firstly, disputed the input I got from a writer's group I declined to remain in who rebuked the un-PCness of my sex scenes, saying the sex was not gratuitous, and fit the story well. Gave me detailed instructions on what needed to be done in rewrite, and ask to see story after it was reworked. Thrilling! It's a tough rewrite, but I'm determined. Gave me a boost. I was so inspired I sent out several more stories.

I also emailed some people I hadn't heard back from, only to find out they never received my stories. So I got to resend them, and hope for positive response.

The final positive thing was an email I received from my tattoo artist who had gone online and read one of my stories, which she loved so much she's having her mom and her husband read it. She's also ordered Thuglit. It's great when you receive direct feedback from a reader! It makes it all so worth it, even though I've been writing since I was five years old with no one reading me.

I went to a book signing last night for Neal Stephenson's new book, SEVENEVES. Someone asked him how he created his characters. "That's like asking a dog how he scratches his fleas...it's just what I do." Best writing quote to date. Whatever the outcome, it's what I do.

Shout out for novel input...

It is now my choice to gather notes, files, blog entries, pictures, journals, and memories into one form called a novel. This is quite a task, and most days I'm sure I'm not up for it. Then I have those days when I just sit down for hours and do it. I would like to ask all those who have faithfully read, followed, joined, and maybe discarded my entries to re-read them. Let me know if there is anything you absolutely do not want me to leave out of my book. You needn't limit your comments to this blog. If there is any part of Kent and my journey that you would like me to tell, let me know. Or if you want to include a part of your journey with us, I will also consider those entries. It is now my task to slog through pages and pages of blog writings, journals, notes and memories. I then need to attempt to compile all this material into a format called a novel. Today I started my novel, which will be a mixture of Kent's story, my story, and my grief walkabout - trip around the world. I've collated information into Scrivener and will start this process. It is daunting, starting a novel. And in some ways, especially nowadays when everyone is or wants to be, a writer. I don't just want to write a novel. I want to feel that feeling of ascending myself, going beyond who I am...going to that faraway planet where I've said something I could never imagine I had the wit, courage, or stamina to say. I remember when I first started writing short stories again, what a high mountain that seemed from beginning to publication. Now, although it's still a challenge, it's not the monster under the bed it used to be.

I have a graphic artist/editor who will help me with createaspace, and an artist friend who is interested in doing the cover. I have three possible titles. I'm thinking that I'll do a contest for the title, and maybe even do t-shirts, but that's just my imagination running away from the real work, which is facing what happened again. I envision a book filled with flashbacks, dreams, stories, photographs, based in grief and joy. I feel like I'm strong enough to write this book, although I know it is going to put me through some changes. Like I told a friend today, "I'm scared, but that's never stopped me." Wish me Luck.

CATCH UP ON STORIES PUBLISHED AND OTHER NEWS FOR 2014

I have been working on my short stories, getting published, and on several new novella projects, and Blog writing went on the back burner. I did want to update some writing news.

My short story, STALKER, has been signed to be included in the Fabula Press Aestas 2014 Short Story Anthology sometime before the end of the year. This will be a print anthology out of Hong Kong. There may be delays due to the current situation. I haven't had an update from publishers.  There is now a TV show with the same title, and similar subject matter. I'm not sure what impact that will have on my story. I wrote the story several years ago. I tweeted the writers to see if they would be interested in using my story for a script idea.

I joined an online Science Fiction writers forum to get feedback, and I was finally able to finish my explicit Science Fiction novella. BREED is now being considered for the Winter Edition of Speculative Fiction.

I currently have about 11 submissions out to various magazines, ezines, and contests.

I was invited and attended the Napa Valley Writer's Conference in July, 2014. It was a great experience, and the rewrite material I received for my short story, TRACKED, has been very helpful. This is a longer story than I usually write, and has presented me with some additional challenges. Usually, I map out a story in my head before I write a word so I know the beginning to the end. Of course, I make changes along the way, but I usually know where I am going. In this story, I started with an idea and great characters, but no end in sight. The feedback I received was helpful, but I'm still stuck with deciding where this story will end up.

I am currently on the road again. Southern California, then on to Maui, then back to SoCal, then back to Northern California in December, 2014. Will try to post more often, but no guarantees.

Well, it's been a long while since I've posted on my blog. The Round the World pretty much fried me on blog writing, and I wanted to concentrate on my short stories. Which is what this update is about. I am now in print, so for all those bloggees who faithfully slogged through my travels, you can now read my "real" writing.

WHO I AM....

It may be, because I don't actively jump on every bandwagon, people assume I have no point of view.

So here is mostly what I believe.

I am a hope to die pragmatist; I believe that no matter how good something is there is always a
way to fuck it up. I believe in fairies. The sunset on the west side of Maui. The smiling face of a two year old. A fine hard ass on anyone. I believe I have friends everywhere and have truely loved
and been loved. I don't believe anything I read on the internet. I love tattoos and some of the
people who wear them. I love the sound of motorcycles riding down the highway, surf pounding on sand, speakers throbbing rock and roll. I have little care for bullies, ninnys, whiners, or
malcontents; I have to work at tolerance remembering that I have been them all at some time in my long life. I love this big blue ball we live on. I would go to another ball if invited. I cry at
the high note in the National Anthem or the low note in Battle Hymn of the Republic. I love a high
fly ball and a perfect pass. I come from a long line of rebels. I am a spiritual warrior. I know a
life can be reinvented. I read books because I love words on a page. I would shoot someone for
burning a book. I thrive on comic book heros, true love stories, bloody histories; crime, blood,
lust, love, and magic. Life is magic. Medea to King Lear to Midsummer Night's Dream to Gone With
the Wind to Casablanca to Pulp Fiction to Lord of the Rings. I've cried as much in movies as I have
in real life. I love people who love, no matter who they love or why. I love men and women who love
men and woman. I throw on and change frequently the costumes that we all put on to convince each
other of who we are and where we belong. From three piece suit dressers to cross-dressers, I've
dressed up, dressed down, and ran naked with many of you through the gleaming of a sunrise that has now become my sunset. I believe in this circus tent that is life, with all its geeks, freaks, and lion tamers. I love to crack the whip sometimes. I vote for people, not sound bites. If I must have
a label, I am a pagan. I believe that any belief not based in experience is a lie. I don't believe in religions created by man. When the real deal shows up, either god or alien, I believe I will
know it. I love to dance, play, laugh, sing, and fuck with thoughts, ideas, and dreams. I  watch
people spin around in their own certainty about things that no one can be certain about. I believe
that before I die I will have lived the fullest life I possibly could for no other reason than the
telling of the tale. I have no axes to grind, and I abhor the sound of knives being sharpened to
cut pieces out of the human race. I believe in family, blood ties, life bonds, and true friends;
loyalty to those you love and who love you. Living the truth, as well as telling it. I also believe the truth is as mutable as silly putty. I love turtles, whales, dogs, cats, elephants, eagles, tigers, and wolves. I don't love centipedes, rats, camels, snakes, chickens, rabbits, or dolphins. I am not interested in single points of view, or the people who hold onto them. I do not have the makings of a groupee or guru feet kisser. I don't want to be a follower or a leader. I am the star in my universe and I just want to shine. I remain unconvinced that anyone here knows any more about anything really important that I do. And so, just to be perfectly clear, I don't care who you vote for, pray to, or fuck; if you fit into my life puzzle, for whatever reason, I will honor the piece of life that is you. If none of this makes any sense, I believe you need to take a long walk
barefoot in warm sand, kiss someone whose lips taste of cotton candy, hug a baby close to your
cheek and breath in smells of talcium and sweet new life, spread the ashes of someone you love off
the top of a temple in the hot ancient air of Ankor Wat, walk around smiling for no reason except
that it makes you and everyone around you feel better. Then when your heart is open and your mind is clear, if you really want to know who I am, read this again.

Home again, Home again...

Well followers, whoever you may be, I am back home on Maui. I still have a few more things to report on about my trip through New Zealand, my final days in Sydney, and my return home. Once I've posted those reports (if I actually do write them which is a big if because now that I'm home I have other interests to move on to), I will end this blog for the time being. I do plan to start up again when I go off on my next adventure, whenever and wherever that may be...so stay tuned, if you like.
